Houston Oilers: A Legacy in American Football

From Houston to Tennessee

The Houston Oilers, a former professional American football team, left an indelible mark on the history of the sport. From their humble beginnings in 1960 as a member of the American Football League (AFL) to their eventual relocation to Tennessee and rebranding as the Titans in 1996, the Oilers captivated audiences for decades.

AFL Dominance

Led by star quarterback George Blanda, the Oilers emerged as a force in the AFL, capturing the first two AFL championships in 1960 and 1961. They also won four AFL Eastern Division titles and boast a respectable 65-19-6 regular season record.

NFL Merger

In 1970, the AFL merged with the NFL, creating a single, unified league. The Oilers joined the NFL as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) and continued to compete at a high level. They reached the playoffs nine times and advanced to the AFC Championship game twice in their time in Houston.
