England struggling in midfield due to absence of Kalvin Phillips, admits Southgate
England manager Gareth Southgate has identified the absence of Kalvin Phillips as a major factor in his team's struggles in midfield at Euro 2024.
Speaking after England's 1-1 draw with Denmark in Frankfurt, Southgate said: "We're not finding it easy to control games in midfield at the moment. We're not getting the same intensity and energy that we did with Kalvin in the team."
Phillips was a key player for England at the Euros last summer, but he has been ruled out of this tournament with a shoulder injury. Southgate has experimented with several different midfield combinations in Phillips' absence, but none have been able to replicate his impact.
